It was a happy new year for one of the Angus Clubs on Thursday when Forfar Athletic took the points with a 5-1 win over Brechin City, writes Sarah McLean.
Martyn Fotheringham opened the scoring in the seventh minute with Chris Templeman making it 2-0 just 10 minutes later.
And the Loons were on fire as first Darren Dods then Dale Hilson banged in a further two goals before half-time to make it 4-0 going into the break.
In the second half the Glebe Park side managed to pull back a goal with 15 minutes to go courtesy of Robert Barr but Templeman sealed the three points when he scored a fifth.
The win saw Forfar stay sixth in the table with 22 points while Brechin City dropped down to eighth with their 19 points.
Meanwhile, Arbroath’s misery continued as they went down 1-0 away to East Fife. Nathan Austin took the only goal of the game in the 27th minute but it was enough to see Arbroath’s losing streak continue as it’s now over two months since they last recorded a win.
Arbroath are currently languishing ninth in the table with just 14 points, two ahead of bottom-of-the-table side Airdrieonians who have 12.
There was no action on Saturday but it’s back to normal business on Saturday, January 11, now the festive period has come to an end.
Arbroath will welcome Brechin City to Gayfield for their first derby meeting of 2014 and it’s sure to be an interesting one.
Forfar Athletic will welcome Stenhousemuir to Station Park.
In the SPFL League Two, Montrose have had a festive season to forget as they’ve been plagued by red cards and poor results.
However, they did get a point out of their 0-0 draw against Berwick Rangers at Links Park on Thursday. But despite how close the league was looking just a few short weeks ago the gap is starting to widen.
The Gable Endies have fallen to seventh in the table while league leaders Peterhead are pulling away at the top with 36 points - four ahead of second placed Clyde.
So Montrose will be doing their utmost to find their form again when they travel to face Albion Rovers on Saturday, January 11.
