Brechin bakers to be taken over

IT WILL be the end of an era for one Brechin business on Saturday, January 26, as they close up their shop for the last time.

Alex and Deborah McKay, who run McKay’s Bakery have announced, with sadness, that they will be ceasing business on January 26. However, they have also revealed that Les Robertson, who originates from Brechin, will be taking over the store and opening Robertson The Bakery Limited, which will open on Monday, January 28.

Robertson the Bakery is based in Stonehaven and was established in 1958

Speaking before they closed, Alex and Deborah said: “We wish to take the opportunity to thank our many loyal customers and staff for their support over they ears, going back to 1950 when the business was opening by Mr and Mrs McKay senior.

“We are glad to announce that Les Robertson of Robertson the Baker in Stonehaven will be opening. We are confident that the shop will continue to sell quality products by the existing shop staff. We wish Les and his team all the best for the future.”

Les will be assisted in the running of his business by his sister Gail Milne, who is also local to Brechin. Also assisting the Brechin store will be Alan Thomson, from Brechin, who served his apprenticeship at McKay’s, as well as working at the bakery for six years. Audrey McLean, who has been with McKay’s for nine years will continue as confectioner.

Speaking about the move, Les said: “The opportunity to add a retail facility in Brechin is a welcome addition.”
