Pupils past and present gathered at Brechin Cathedral to pay tribute to Steve Dempsey, who has retired as rector at Brechin High School.

Mr Dempsey stepped down from his post as head teacher on February 7, after 10 years in charge. A concert to honour him, and celebrate his retirement, was held at the Cathedral on February 8.

Brechin High School’s head boy, Callum Dunleavy, conveyed through some assured and confident words the affection that the pupils have had for Mr Dempsey.

Callum outlined the rector’s involvement in the local community, saying that Mr Dempsey has provided a strong link between the school and the town.

During his time as head teacher at the school, Mr Dempsey worked with a number of community groups - including the Caledonian Railway which recently received a donation of tools no longer used by the school.

He also initiated an award for “Attic Member of the Year” at Brechin’s Youth Project, The Attic. The award was created to reinforce the strong relationship between the school and The Attic.

A variety of pupils and music groups performed at the concert, and the musicians reflected well on the progress at the school in the period that Mr Dempsey has been at the helm.

Taking to the stage to entertain a packed audience were the School Orchestra, the Big Band, the Wind Group, the Jazz Group, the Traditional Music Group and the Ryan Family.

There were also some amazing solos from Gregor O’Neill, Karen Bertram, Douglas Johnstone, Daveena Ritchie, Catherine Wales, Erin Smith, Ellie Hill and Fraser Thomson.

The many pupils, parents and friends present at the Cathedral agreed that Mr Dempsey will be a hard act to follow at Brechin High School.

As reported in last week’s Brechin Advertiser, the new rector of Brechin High School is Archie Bathgate, who was previously deputy head teacher at Arbroath Academy.
