A man appeared in court today (Monday) charged with rape a week after a “particularly distressing assault” on a young woman.
A major investigation was launched after the alleged attack, which took place in an underpass in Robert Street, Arbroath, in the early hours of Sunday, August 9.
The 21-year-old victim was said to have left Coast nightclub in the town just after 2am before heading towards Morrisons supermarket car park nearby.
She was then allegedly attacked between 2.30am and 5am in the underpass in what police described as a “particularly distressing assault”.
Today Mihaita Ivan, 25, of Arbroath, appeared in private from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court charged in connection with the attack.
Ivan faced a single charge of rape during the brief private hearing.
He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further examination.
Ivan was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing next week.
Last week police appealed for residents to provide them with private CCTV footage in a bid to crack the case.
Detective Chief Inspector Bobby Dow, who led the investigation into the alleged crime, said: “I would like to thank the public and local community for their assistance throughout this investigation.”
