Police in Brechin are investigating damage caused to squirrel cages in an estate on the outskirts of the town.
In their appeal for information, the Police explained that the cages are in place to capture grey squirrels as part of a nationally recognised campaign designed to protect the welfare of the native red squirrel.
The cages are checked on a daily basis to ensure no animal is left for lengthy periods. Any red squirrels captured are released whilst any grey squirrels are humanely dispatched.
The appeal added that police “will not tolerate vandalism to any such trap and persons responsible will be prosecuted”.
Information regarding this incident should be passed to police on 101.
