The Arbroath Herald is sad to report the passing of one of the town’s leading lights in sports and charitable fundraising.

Doug Ford passed away on Tuesday night after a battle with illness.

Tributes were paid after his death was announced on the Facebook page of Arbroath Amateur Boxing Club, of which he was a founding member along with his late brother Dave.

An all round sportsman, boxing was a lifelong love, his first competitive fight was at the age of 15, and in 1961, he and his brother founded the Arbroath Amateur Boxing Club which has enjoyed much success and produced a number of champions over the years.

He was also a keen golfer, collecting a number of trophies, and played in goals at junior league level for The Anchorage, The Vics and The Ashdale.

A lover of music, Doug was a familiar face on stage as well belting out hits from the Rat Pack era alongside some of the best vocal talents in Angus.

Supporting good causes was another thing close to Doug’s heart and he was able to harness his passion and talent to a string of charity boxing nights and fundraising concerts which have over the years raised a six figure sum for a diverse range of organisations.

In 2006 he was named Rotary Club of Arbroath’s Citizen of the Year in recognition of his good works.
