Tastebuds will be tingling from Montrose to Monifeith and from Kirriemuir to Carnoustie later this week, when the Taste of Angus Festival takes place across the county from March 19-27.
Like many Angus establishments, The Clova Hotel uses seasonal, local ingredients whenever possible. During the Taste of Angus Festival, the hotel’s chef has devised a special menu showcasing the very best of Angus produce, promising mouthwatering meals in the breathtaking surroundings of Glen Clova.
On March 19 and 20, Murton Farm near Forfar will be hosting a special food market and also serving the winning recipe from Forfar Academy’s soup competition. Soup remains a highlight at Murton Farm on March 21 when the popular tearoom launches its new weekly Senior Special, with soup, sandwich and tea/coffee for £6 for over-65s every Monday.
Also that weekend, Hospitalfield in Arbroath will have a pop-up café, serving a delicious selection of freshly-made food and drink, including a rich, gluten-free beetroot and chocolate cake and Hospitalfield’s version of the Forfar Bridie, as well as providing opportunities to sample their new range of dips and condiments, which are being launched as part of the Taste of Angus Festival.
“Angus is an extraordinary producer of wonderful ingredients,” said Lucy Byatt of Hospitalfield. “There is such demand for vegetarian food from our visiting groups and artists, our chef, Rod Linton, has developed some wonderful vegetarian dips, pestos and tapenades that can be added to soups or pastas or simply spread on toast.”
From 12-2pm on Sunday, March 20, Grewar’s Farm Shop by Birkhill will be offering tastings of Sarah Gray’s jams and chutneys, which are made in Carmyllie using local fruit and vegetables.
“To celebrate the Taste of Angus Festival, we’ll also be treating customers who come along then to a free cup of soup made from vegetables on sale in our farm shop, which are all grown in Angus,” said Michael Dye of Grewar’s Farm Shop.
Other foodie events happening during the Taste of Angus Festival include coffee workshops, cook and taste sessions, meet the producer events, a Taste of Angus Night at Arbroath delicatessen Smithie’s and a wedding fair at the Airlie Arms in Kirriemuir, which will highlight the hotel’s commitment to using local produce.
Fleur, the beautifully decorated vintage Citroen van which serves Artisana’s delicious home baking at events all over Angus, will make an appearance at Barry Mill’s Duck Race Day on Sunday, March 27. “Fleur will be keeping everyone topped up with cake and refreshments, including Sacred Grounds’ Coffee, which is from Angus’ only coffee roaster,” said Ailsa Hayward of Artisana, who is holding one of her highly popular bread making workshops during the Taste of Angus Festival.
“Angus is synonymous with quality produce and I’m delighted Artisana – and Fleur – are involved in the Taste of Angus Festival. It’s vitally important to promote local produce. Apart from the fact that buying local produce ensures you have the freshest of ingredients, which haven’t travelled miles and miles to reach you, you’re more than likely dealing with artisan producers who take a huge pride in providing the very best, from production techniques to your first bite or sip!”
