Spring is traditionally the time many people start to think about tackling jobs around the house and garden.

DIY and gardening are good forms of exercise but people are also being reminded to avoid accidents with the message ‘Don’t Injure Yourself’.

As part of the NHSScotland Be Health-Wise This Easter campaign, DIY and gardening enthusiasts are being reminded to take care and be prepared to deal with any minor accidents before tackling those all-important home and garden improvements.

NHS 24’s Medical Director, Professor George Crooks said: “The good weather is a great opportunity to be more active, especially getting out into the garden, but we would encourage everyone to be prepared before they open the toolbox or garden shed.

“This means making sure that you are ready to treat any minor injuries with items such as plasters and antiseptic in the first aid box. If you do suffer with a minor injury then your local pharmacist can help with advise on treatments so it’s good to know when they are open.

“If you’re planning on some spring cleaning be careful when moving furniture and if you do feel the strain the next day the NHS inform Musculoskeletal Zone and App has lots of advice for sorting those aches and pains.”

Depending on your local health board, your local GP surgery will be closed for either three or four days from Good Friday (March 25) to Easter Monday (March 28), before re-opening on Tuesday, March 29.

The Be Health-Wise This Easter campaign reminds everyone that by taking a few simple steps and knowing when their GP surgery and local pharmacy is open, re-stocking their medicine cabinet and first aid box if needed, they can ensure they stay healthy this spring.

General advice and information on how to stay healthy this Easter can be found at or contact NHS inform on 0800 22 44 88. The Musculoskeletal (MSK) App is available free from the Google Play and App Store.
