Brechin High held its launch of the 2012 Angus Book Award yesterday, with Mr Digney’s S3 English class participating.

This prestigious annual prize for teenage fiction is world renowned.

The award began in 1996 and is unique in that it is led by pupils, only participating S3 pupils may vote - in a secret ballot - to determine the winning author, and likewise it’s the pupils themselves who run proceedings at the swanky evening Award Ceremony, this year to be held in Carnoustie High School.

This year’s shortlisted titles are: Pastworld, by Ian Beck, Flip, by Martyn Bedford, Iboy by Kevin Brooks, and Being Billy, by Phil Earle.

Between now and May, Mr Digney’s class will read all four titles in class, taking part in learning activities based around the books, including the production of a short film.

Participation in the award affords pupils the rare opportunity to meet world class authors - shortlisted authors visit all eight secondary schools in Angus - and gain invaluable insight into their writing craft.
