Artist’s Family reunite at Lathallan School event

On Saturday, August 30, Lathallan School welcomed the family of the original artist of the painting ‘Last Train to Inverbervie’ which was painted in 1966 by Reverend Frederick Kennedy of Montrose Old Church.

Rob Kennedy, the Reverend’s son and his wife Elizabeth Kennedy were delighted to see it displayed in the Lathallan School Ballroom. Rob and Elizabeth now live in Stonehaven and Rob recalls being a train conductor on that very last journey!

The picture representing the last train journey between Inverbervie and Montrose on May 22, 1966, was presented back to the school earlier this year.

All the boys of Lathallan School travelled on this train and alighted at Brotherton Halt. It was painted by the Reverend Frederick Kennedy of Montrose Old Church, presented to the School by Mr and Mrs Mather in 1967, and was restored by artist Roddy Lakin in 2013.

Chairman of the Old Lathallian Association, Mr Alastair Shepherd (1968-1973) welcomed the Kennedy family. Pictured left to right, Alastair Shepherd, Christopher Kennedy (Grandson of Rev Kennedy), Elizabeth Kennedy, Rob Kennedy, Christine Kennedy (wife of Christopher) and little Hannah Kennedy.

If any Old Boys can recall this final train journey or indeed know Mr and Mrs Mather, they are welcome to contact Mrs Andrea Watt, Head of Development and Alumni Relations at the school on 01561 362220 or email andreawatt@lathallan.org.uk
