Moving to a foreign country where you don’t know the language might not sound like the first thing you would do but one teenager is doing just that.

Holly Kidd, from Edzell, didn’t know what she wanted to do when she left school, that was until she was inspired by a visitor to the school who spoke about her gap year with the educational voluntary charity, Project Trust.

Having just come to the end of her sixth year at Mearns Academy, Holly will now embark on a trip to Malaysia where she will spend a year as a teaching assistant - if she can raise enough money for the trip.

“About a year ago I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school,” explained Holly.

“We had a speaker from Project Trust, a return volunteer, and I was totally blown away by it.

“I looked online, had a look of the website and it sounded fantastic.

“I applied for their selection course and had to go to the Isle of Coll for five days so they got to know you and we got to know them.”

When in Malaysia Holly will be volunteering as a teaching assistant in a Mara School.

“Mara Schools are Government run secondary schools for Malay children who have quite rural backgrounds and are classed as third world citizens,” commented Holly.

“It gives children the opportunity to receive a good educations.

“I have read online that a lot of the students there go on and graduate and get scholarships to study overseas.”

To fund the trip Holly has to raise a total £5,400 and has already raised £3,100 through a number of fund-raising activities from quiz sheets to holding stalls at car book sales as well as donations from family, friends and charitable trusts.

To help reach her total Holly is having a fashion show on June 25 at 7 for 7.30 p.m. at The Burn House, Edzell, with clothes being supplied by Encore, Fettercairn.

Tickets, costing £10, can be purchased from the Tweedie, the Post Office and The Burn house in Edzell and PamperZone in Laurencekirk. Tickets include a drink, nibbles and entry to the door prize.

She will also be holding a bag pack at Tesco in Montrose on July 6 and will have a stall at the Edzell Gala in August.

Holly leaves for Malaysia in August.
