Three former Brechin High School pupils received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at a ceremony at Holyrood House last week.

Alex Barclay, Laura Bird and Laura Cuthill met HRH Prince Philip who is patron of the organisation.

Alex said: “He stopped and asked us about our expedition and we told him we canoed along the River Spey.

“We were so pleased to meet him, it made all our hard work seem worth it.”

The girls would like to thank all staff at Brechin High School who make the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme such a success at the school by giving up a lot of their personal time.

They would especially like to thank Mrs Ali Govan and Mrs Fiona O’Neill who were with them on all their canoeing expeditions and were such a big help in encouraging them to complete the award.
