John Forster from Brechin based business Forster Energy met with local Angus MP Mike Weir at a Solar Trade Association event.

The MP pledged his support to the Solar Trade Association’ (STA) campaign to achieve one million solar roofs across the UK by 2015.

Forster Energy is a significant player in the solar market.

The business is growing alongside it’s better known roofing business, which provides the roofs for one in five of Scotland’s new homes, as well as an extensive roof replacement service to public sector and social housing providers.

Mr Weir said: “With a growing team of over 120 and a head office staff of 27 based in Brechin the company is already a significant part of our local economy.

“They have also been involved in prestige projects such as a substantial contract supplying solar and roofing to the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village as well as a rapidly growing service to the commercial and agricultural sectors, helping them to cut energy costs and cut carbon emissions.

“Solar provides an excellent way to generate renewable energy and can be incorporated into many new builds and replacements to existing roofs.

“The Feed-In Tariff (FIT), which supports investors in solar power, has reduced by 65 per cent since the schemes started in 2010.

“However, dramatic cost reductions in PV module prices and efficient installation methods mean returns for domestic investors in solar power today remain as good as when the scheme started.”

The STA have developed an online information point offering expert advice for the public on how to go solar at The website includes an estimated returns ‘calculator’.

The STA is a not-for-profit industry association and the YourRoof information point is non-commercial and accepts no sponsorship.
