A new feature film based on Brechin’s most famous son has received a funding boost from the City of Brechin Civic Trust.

Brechin Civic Trust has revealed that a donation of £5,000 will be given to the production of ‘Castles in the Sky’, which will be based on Sir Robert Watson-Watt.

Glasgow based Black Camel Pictures is to produce the feature film, with their previous works including ‘Sunshine on Leith’, ‘Outpost’ and ‘Outpost II’.

The role of Robert Watson-Watt is to be played by Eddie Izzard, who has featured in Hollywood films such As ‘Oceans 12’, as well as being a well-known comedian and fund-raiser.

The film will be directed by Gillies MacKinnon, whose credits include ‘Hideous Kinky’ with Kate Winslett and ‘Regeneration’ with Johnny lee Miller.

The producer for the film is Simon Wheeler, and another Brechiner is set to be involved, with Arabella Page-Croft as coproducer alongside Kieran parker.

Another notable name in the line-up of the film is Laura Fraser, who will star alongside Eddie Izzard. She has recently worked on ‘Breaking Bad’ in the USA.

Sir Robert Watson-Watt, born in Brechin in 1892. Known as the ‘father of radar’, he was the radar pioneer who led the team that was crucial in the defence of Britain against the onslaught of the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War.

A spokesperson for the Civic Trust commented: “Brechin Civic Trust sees the film as worthy recognition of the man deemed by many as the greatest Brechiner of the 20th Century as well as bringing welcome publicity to the town.”
