Flower festival for games

Brechin and District Floral Art Club is taking part in a spectacular flower festival to coincide with the opening of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The event, which will be held at Glasgow Cathedral, has been organised by the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (SAFAS) and will see hundreds of amateur floral arrangers from across Scotland create a tribute to the hard work and dedication that has gone in to the games.

A spokesperson for the event explained: “‘Roots, Shoots and Fruits’ will fill the Cathedral with an abundance of colour and dramatic displays, all beautifully designed by the 70 SAFAS clubs who are taking part.

The Festival has secured Lottery funding and each participating club has been granted £100 of SAFAS funds. They are then carrying out their own additional fund-raising to enable them to buy flowers.”

The official opening service will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. by Reverend Laurence Whitley. The Festival will be open to the public on Wednesday, July 23, and Thursday, July 24, from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Brechin and District Floral Art Club, whose display title is Whiskey, have been sponsored by Glencaddam Distillery and Brechin Castle Garden Centre.
