FORFAR ACADEMY SCHOOL NOTES MAY 6, 2010

FORFAR Academy senior girls were crowned Angus Schools Champions recently after winning three of their four matches in the five school tournament at the Arbroath all-weather pitches.

They defeated Monifieth 2-1 in their opening game, with Sarah Balneaves and Jane Ritchie scoring the goals. Rachel Wilson's solitary strike was enough to dispose of Carnoustie High in the next match before their only setback, a 0-2 reverse at the hands of Websters from Kirriemuir.

Forfar made it three wins out of four when they beat the much-fancied Arbroath High 1-0 with Becky Whyte grabbing the winner.

Sports Relief: Well done to all who consumed chocolate – a massive 547.90 worth of Dubble (Fairtrade chocolate). Well done and thanks to those who gave up their lunchtime to join the aerobics session, expertly led by Mr Bennett.

Pupils were allowed to wear casual clothes for the day and the superb sum of 1100 was raised.

Angus Cross Country Championships: Congratulations to Beth Milne who won the silver medal in the Individual 1st year girls event – a brilliant achievement. Congratulations to team members Rachael Kydd (9th), Keris Douglas (10th), Laura Wilson (17th) and Louise Cromar (21st) who together won silver in the team competition. All other runners competed well. Thanks to Sean Baird who was sent out to the furthermost point to marshal runners all morning.

Wear Something Purple Day: Friday, March 26 was International Epilepsy Awareness Day and Epilepsy Scotland held a national event called " Purple Day"

Following the sad loss last year of fourth year pupil Christina Illa, the school felt that it was appropriate to participate in this event and therefore pupils were invited to wear something purple along with their normal school uniform and to make a donation of 1.

Other events taking place at the school were : cake and candy stall, a pay to play session in the computer department where there was Guitar Hero (PS2) and Just Dance (Wii) for 50p a time and Dingbats Quizzes.

All proceeds from the day (1037.32) went to Epilepsy Scotland in memory of Christina.

A further fund-raiser will be held in July when a number of pupils will be busking at the Wellgate Centre in Dundee, this time for Epilepsy Bereaved.

East of Scotland Debating Competition: Eilidh Collins and Matthew Steel took part in the final of the East of Scotland Debating Competition and were by far the best team. They were selected to go through to the Grand Final to be held in St. Andrews on Friday, June 4 and should be congratulated for achieving this excellent result.

Many thanks go to Jodie Duncan and Holly Richardson for being a last-minute, non-competitive team after Glenalmond were disqualified for being too old. The girls spoke brilliantly in their first-ever debate and were a credit to Forfar Academy.

Girls Night in the PE Department: Tuesday nights are for girls only in the PE Department with all facilities available from 3.45 pm to 5 pm for pupils to choose any activities they want.

Forfar Academy Year Book: The Forfar Academy Year Book has arrived and it looks great. A big 'well done and thank you' to the Year Book Committee and everyone else who contributed.

Due to the fundraising efforts of the committee, the final cost for each book has come in at 15. The Year Book DVD will also be ready very soon and will be priced at 2 for those pupils who have already purchased a copy of the Year Book and 3 for everyone else.

Schools Fantasy League: Congratulations to March's Whole-School Manager of the Month, Mr Brown, who, thanks to Tevez's recent hat-trick, just pipped Sam Davidson S3, Finlay Couston S3 and Gavin Thomson S2. There are also two year group managers who, for the fourth time in a row, are Greg Wingham S6 and Fraser Reid S1. Bilaal Ahmed S5 is also a Manager of the Month for the third time this season.

German Exchange: A very successful exchange visit from pupils in Ebern has just concluded, culminating in a highly enjoyable ceilidh in the school a week past Friday.

Pupils visited Glamis Castle, Stirling Castle, St. Andrews, Discovery Point, Dundee and Edinburgh.

The school would like to thank pupils, staff and host families for their support and hospitality.

Forfar pupils are very much looking forward to a return visit to Ebern in mid June.

Going For Gold: S1 Going For Gold Assemblies are taking place over the next two weeks in the School Assembly Hall.

Once In A Lifetime Opportunity: Places have become available at short notice on a Chinese Language Immersion Course organised by Learning and Teaching Scotland working with the British Council. The course will be held in Beijing. The course is for pupils aged between 15 and 16 years in July 2010. Students will be asked to pay 380 towards the cost of their flights by May 4. 2010 and will have to the pay the cost of getting to and from Glasgow Airport.

The group leaves Glasgow Airport on July 13 and returns on August 3. The course will be held in Beijing and will involve 30 hours of language tuition in China and 10 hours of language tuition before departure.

Language Club: A Language Club has started in the Modern Languages department.

Pupils can get help with French, German and Spanish, learn a new language or play language interactive games. Any pupils interested should speak to Mrs Hutton.

Scottish Schools Curling Championships: The Forfar Academy Curling team recently took part in the Scottish Schools' Curling Championships held at Murrayfield Ice Arena.

After Day 1, the team was top of their group with two wins under their belt. Day 2 did not go so well with a draw and two defeats relegating the team to fourth place in the group, thereby halting further progress.

However, the team performed very well at national level.

Representing the Academy were Andrew Callandar (skip), Lesley Young, Katy Shepherd, Louise Joiner and Hailey Duff.
