A former Brechin man is to run the London Marathon in aid of ME Research, an illness his father suffered from for many years.
John Ritchie, who now lives in Stonehaven, has been in training for the marathon which is held on Sunday and hopes to complete the distance in less than four hours.
His father, also John, explained that his son had run the marathon two years ago in aid of the Junior Diabetic Research Foundation as his son Duncan (17) is a diabetic sufferer.
John, snr., said that at that time his son completed the marathon in under four hours and helped raise a collective total of more than half a million pounds.
“He is to run this year in aid of ME Research UK Ltd. I fell ill in the mid-80s and after two years of fighting the illness I was invited by local doctors and fellow sufferers to chair what became known as the Tayside ME Self Help Group,” he added.
He said that as well as his son running in aid of the charity he had a framed picture of Aberdeen FC when they won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1983 to sell, which has been valued at £500 which is to be added to John’s sponsorship total.
