The Caledonian Hotel was packed last week at a quiz night in support of Brechin High School pupils’ forthcoming journey to Rwanda.

The pupils are going in October this year under the auspices of the High School’s Rector Archie Bathgate and PE teacher Lyndsay Gray.

Mr Bathgate has been involved for many years in the ‘Comfort Rwanda’ project, which has done great work in a country recovering from the dreadful war of genocide 21 years ago.

Comfort Rwanda has been involved in a number of schemes including water pumps, the supply of goats and cows to local farmers, building houses and schools, and other ways to aid healing and reconciliation for the people of Rwanda.

Mr Bathgate’s enthusiasm to help has rubbed off on to some of the pupils and they depart for a 12 day stay later this year.

David Robinson was the quizmaster on the night so all manner of dubious and fishy questions were served up, often at the expense of the Rector.

The winning team, Tech Republic, narrowly won the competition of 20 teams.
