The Forfar office of Angus County Press sits right next door to the popular Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant so the staff are constantly lured in by the aromas emanating from the kitchens.
Wafts of ginger and other spices are just too much for us, particularly at the end of a busy week, so we made a bee-line for the Castle Street eatery for a recent staff night out.
As usual the friendly staff were attentive and very patient as we read and re-read the vast menu with various combinations of starters and main courses eventually ordered.
My choice on the night was a starter of chicken satay skewers which were served with a small side salad.
Sometimes satay can either be over-powering or a bit insipid, but on this occasion the creamy sauce had just the right flavour and kick.
There were three skewers each with large chunks of chicken on them.
Other starters included spring rolls and Peking-style breaded prawns, again served with a small side salad, and there were clean plates all round.
For my main course and I opted for chicken and green pepper in black bean sauce - a culinary delight.
The chicken was beautifully tender and coated in the rich sauce.
I like the use of food warmers which ensure your dishes remain hot throughout the meal. They also mean you can have as little of your dish or as much - it does not all come served on the plate.
There was also an additional dish of fried rice for those wishing to top up if necessary.
Again our party all chose well and were more than satisfied with their choices for a main.
They included a full portion of chicken satay (without skewers) and a chicken combination (chicken, Chinese roast pork, prawns, cashew nuts and vegetables).
Another main course was deep fried shredded crispy beef served in a an ornate ‘bird’s nest’ with fried rice and chips on the side.
The large, welcoming restaurant is the ideal location for a night out with friends, and the fact it is right next door to us is an added bonus.
A take-away service is also available but it is nice to book a table to sample the special dishes on offer.
