Brechin’s Good as New shop held its annual general meeting in the Dalhousie Centre on Wednesday, August 14.

During their annual general meeting the ladies from the shop handed over a number of cheques to local organisations.

Shop manager Betty Hendry presented a cheque for £5,000 to Martin Bryant Evans and Dr Betty Cohen of the Dalhousie Day Care Centre.

Since it opened 25 years ago the shop has donated £78,000 to the centre (which also celebrates its 25th anniversary this year) that has mostly gone towards funding their minibuses but also for other projects such as providing a bath suitable for disabled people and patio furniture to allow members of the centre to sit outside and enjoy the good weather. On behalf of the centre Betty Cohen thanked the shop for their donation.

Also benefitting from donations from the shop over the has been the Mechanics’ Institute that this year received a donation for £1,000 which was handed to Ewen Mitchell and Stewart Hill from the Institute.

Brechin youth project The Attic has also received help and this year Meg Milne and Caroline Southesk received a donation of £1,000 from the shop.

In 25 years the shop has had just three managers. Maimie Bruce was the first manager, helped by Margery Smith, When she resigned Beth Paterson took over the reigns before the currently manager, Betty Hendry, took over.

Some of the volunteers of the shop may well have been there since it began.

The shop are also grateful to Peter and Carol Kinghorn who have allowed the ladies to use the shop for all these years and, of course, to the people of Brechin who have supported the shop over the years.
