The Osnaburg Bar in Forfar has undergone a complete transformation during the last year, the latest of which is its bistro style dining room in the lounge bar.
There is a familiar face in the kitchen with the welcome return of one of the former mine hosts of O’Hara’s bistro in Forfar, where the food and atmosphere were second to none.
So I was looking forward to seeing what she had come up with for the lunch menu on Friday and, as expected, I was not disappointed.
Among Friday’s specials were seafood chowder (£3.95); haggis mushrooms (£3.95); calamari fritti (£4.95) and chilli burger (£6.95).
We opted for two mains from the specials’ board - Thai chicken and sweet potato curry with roti bread and fragrant rice, and a main portion of chicken satay.
Both meals were served on piping hot dishes - always a winner with me - along with a side salad and, on this occasion, we asked for a portion of fries on the side.
Both meals were beautifully presented and full of flavour.
Satay is one of my favourites; the five large pieces of chicken were succulent and coated in the delicious sauce, accompanied by perfectly cooked rice.
The curry too was bursting with various flavours and the bread roti bread complemented the dish.
I was impressed, but not surprised, by the quality of the food served and looking round at the other tables was also impressed at the attention to detail.
The seafood chowder was served in its own crock pot, complete with lid, which ensured it was piping hot; diners were advised the menu was flexible and when one customer asked for a glass of white wine she was given the option of three varieties rather than a standard house wine - great attention to detail.
The menu also included baguettes served with fries (add a bowl of soup for £2), baked potatoes served with salad or paninis served with fries, although you can mix and match.
Many congratulations to all those behind this latest venture which is putting the ‘Os’ back on the map.
Please note, at the time of writing, lunches only are served Monday to Friday.
