A new study to see whether Montrose could be linked up to the A90 at Stracathro has been given the green light.

Angus Council’s communities committee approved the topographical study to see whether the region around Hill of Stracathro could accommodate a heavy goods route that would link Montrose and the trunk road next to its Brechin junction.

The report outlined that, following the Brechin and Montrose charrettes, there was public support for looking at road links that remove HGVs from the town centres.

Major upgrades to any road from either Mill of Dun or Hillside would need to be carried out and the road under the Hillside Rail Bridge would need to be lowered.

Angus Lib Dem Councillor David May, who represents Montrose, has backed the study, claiming it would boost oil and gas jobs in the area.

He said: “I am fully aware that Montrose and Angus is suffering from the loss of oil-related jobs as in a recent report on the industry it is estimated that one third of the jobs have already gone. I know from direct contacts in the industry that more are planned and Montrose is directly being affected as people I know have lost jobs in that industry.

“I back the report to conduct this feasibility study as we need to do as much as possible to make our transport links to the A90 as good as possible in order to attract job to our town and to Angus.

“I have written to the Transport Minister to ensure that the design work on the much needed Laurencekirk Junction is completed as a matter of urgency, so that we can get diggers on site as we need to get this flyover not only started, but completed.

“The planned developments on our former aerodrome and the possibility of work in the renewable sector will be boosted if the road system to the A90 is improved.

“As far as the Montrose and Angus economy is concerned, in a period of doom for oil-related jobs, this report should be a welcome boost to our economy and for more jobs, and will be positive news for the medium and long term.”

The costs of the survey and design plan are estimated at around £50,000 and come from the budget allocation for infrastructure development for 2015/16.
