Brechin companies receive health award

BRECHIN organisations were among the stars of a special ceremony last Wednesday to celebrate their efforts in building healthy workplaces for staff.

Eleven Tayside companies have achieved Bronze awards and four companies have achieved Silver awards in the Healthy Working Lives programme, a national award scheme which is run and managed by the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives.

The award-winning organisations received their certificates at City Chambers, Dundee, from Steve Bell, Strategic Director, National Centre for Healthy Working Lives.

The Healthy Working Lives Award programme offers a comprehensive and accessible evidence-based framework for improving health at work, relevant to the needs of all employers, which celebrates good practice.

211 workplaces across Tayside participate in the Healthy Working Lives programme, which represents 39,000 employees. Among the workplace initiatives undertaken by organisations receiving awards were walking challenge; Zumba classes; weight management classes; healthy eating; massage; tai chi; corporate discounted gym memberships; lifestyle checks; sun awareness; breast cancer awareness, to name but a few.

The local organisations receiving Bronze Awards are: Angus Council Lochlands Resource Centre; Matrix International; Scottish Social Services Council

The local organisations receiving Silver Awards are: Angus Council Seaton Grove Care Centre; Angus Council Social Work & Health Home Care & Augmented Care, Fairlie House; Forster Roofing Services Limited

The local organisations receiving Gold Awards are: Hillcrest Housing Association

Health Working Lives is coordinated locally by Pat Davidson of NHS Tayside’s Specialist Health Promotion Service and her team of health promotion experts.

Congratulating all those receiving awards, Pat said: “These organisations show a real commitment to health improvement in Tayside by providing staff with the opportunity to participate in a range of health promoting activities and, ultimately, enjoy the benefits of feeling fitter and healthier.

“The Healthy Working Lives programme has been a huge success in Tayside and I hope to see this good work continuing.”

The NHS Tayside Healthy Working Lives team visits all participating organisations, big and small, regularly advising companies on how to promote health in their specific workplaces, and giving guidance on how companies can introduce further activities. The team also provide confidential Occupational Health and Safety advice and support to workplaces employing less than 250 staff. All services provided are free of charge.
