ANGUS Council has launched its latest initiative to meet housing need in the county.
The council has signed up to the national House Exchange website which will allow tenants to exchange house with tenants throughout the country.
The new system, which came into effect last week, will enable tenants looking for a house swap to use a custom-made website to look for a new home.
Staff in libraries and ACCESS offices in Angus will assist tenants without computer skills to register and use the scheme, ensuring all applicants are able to make use of the new website.
In addition, the weekly lists transfer lists will still be printed and made available to tenants who wish to swap their homes.
These lists are available at the council’s ACCESS offices.
Angus Council tenants or tenants of partner housing associations can register their details with Angus House Exchange free of charge at www.houseexchange.org.uk
Those wishing to register must have a current live housing application with Angus House Exchange.
Convener of housing, Councillor Jim Millar said: “We know that meeting housing need is not all about building new houses, but also about making the most of the homes we already have.
“At present, there are only about 30 tenant exchanges completed each year.
“This new system will allow much more choice and flexibility and enable tenants to exchange to larger or smaller accommodation to meet their changing needs.
“It will also assist flexibility in the labour market as people can look for house exchanges in areas where they have successfully obtained employment.”
Councillor Millar added: “There is no one way of solving the housing needs of our communities.
“Angus Council is trying a range of ways to maximise the chances people have of getting a suitable affordable house.
“This new website modernises mutual exchanges and we hope that tenants will make full use of it.”
