Brechin youth Imogen Sherrit is hoping to add another destination to her list of world visits as she embarks on a fund-raising initiative.
Imogen, who returned this summer from a year studying in America, is on a fund-raising campaign to help her get to Morocco.
Imogen is aiming to raise £1,750 in order to travel to the country in June 2014 where she will work with Childreach International - a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world.
Imogen said: “I will spend two weeks in a small Berber community at the foot of the Atlas mountains, working alongside other volunteers to help build a learning centre for the locals.
“Secondary education is not free in Morocco, so many children do not have the opportunity to go on to further education.
“Most of them also only speak local tongues and not the national languages of Arabic and French, making it very difficult for them to integrate into society and find employment later in life.
“Once built, this school will provide them with the opportunity to learn the national languages, and improve their prospects for the future.
“This really is a fantastic project because it is more than simply donating money. Instead I get to be a part of creating something tangible that will benefit future generations.”
A third of Imogen’s target goes towards travel costs, another third helps the to purchase the building materials that will be used, and the final third goes directly to Childreach International’s work.
Speaking about her fund-raising activities, Imogen explained: “I recently had a ‘Guess the weight of the pumpkin’ competition going before Hallowe’en in Rosie’s Bakehouse, and Mrs Macmaster from Montrose won the Halloween hamper for guessing closest to the true weight of 14.5 pounds.
“I want to thank Rosie for her help and donation to the hamper, and Gourmet Grocery for their donation also. The competition raised £114, which is a great start to my fund-raising. Thank you to everyone who had a guess!”
She added: “I will be organising more fund-raisers, but any donations in the meantime would be very gratefully received. Please join me in my work for this incredible charity by donating anything you can via my BT MyDonate page at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/imogensherrit.”
