WHen I first started visiting Brechin, nearly two years ago, I was always getting told by the people I knew here that “nothing ever happens in Brechin.”
When I moved here earlier this year this statement was reiterated to me again. Now almost six months in to my job at the Brechin Advertiser, I find that statement very hard to believe.
During my time I have had the pleasure of reporting on the Olympic Torch coming through the city, the Harley Davidson in the City event and now, of course, the visit of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Rothesay.
What struck me most about the Royal visit, was the effort Prince Charles put in to speaking to the crowds that came out to catch a glimpse of him. He made sure to listen to people and seemed genuinely interested in what they had to say.
Of course events like this aren’t always going happen, but it has been a great few months for the town, and it has been fantastic to see people out on the streets celebrating it all.
If someone had told me last year that I would have been able to cover a Royal visit and an Olympic torch relay I would have suggested they cut back on their alcohol intake.
It’s something that in years to come I will be telling people over and over again. No doubt every time Prince Charles appears on the television, I will say to people, “He came to Brechin you know.”
