Have your say

Recently I’ve been struggling with a bit of a cough after battling through a cold and I’ve taken umbrage with cough mixture.

It does relieve my symptoms and stops me sounding like a chain smoker, but it tastes absolutely horrific.

When I was younger, there was a particular brand of children’s medicine that I was given and I would happily take it when I had to because it tasted nice.

Skip forward to my 20s and I am resorting to taking medicine only when I absolutely cannot stand coughing anymore because the taste makes me shudder.

My mother’s response to this has always been: “It doesn’t have to taste nice to be good for you.”

Which is a fair point, but I am much more likely to take it at the proper times if it did taste nice.

(I would like to point out that not all flavoured medicine is nice however. I once was given banana flavoured penicillin and I fought tooth and nail not to take it because it was the most vile thing I’ve ever had the misfortune of tasting.)

If they can make children’s medicine taste nice, why can they not at least attempt to do it with adult medicine?

Any other ailment, I don’t bother with medicine, I quite happily stick to tablets, but there is no other choice really when it comes to medication for coughs.

I may just have to admit defeat and start buying children’s medicine instead (or steal my nephew’s!).
