Invitation to join “Allsorts”

An invitation has been extended to families in the Brechin area who have children with special needs to join a local support group.

The invitation has come from Mearns Allsorts, a support group for families that have children with any additional support needs or disabilities that is based in Laurencekirk.

One of the mums who was behind the setting up of the group, Amy Barclay said that they would welcome anyone who needed access to a support group.

“You do not need to live in Laurencekirk - we have had families visit us from as far as a 20 mile radius and we would like more people to learn about us and think about joining us, “ said Amy, adding that they catered for children with both diagnosed and undiagnosed disabilities.

She said they aimed to provide support, resources and information to families as well as advice on other support that was available.

“We are working closely with charities that support children with additional support needs to help bring more services to the area,” she said.

Amy explained that the group was run on a Wednesday morning from 9.30 to 11.30 a.m. in the Rowan Room at Mearns Community Centre.

“You can bring your children or choose to come by yourself if you have older children at school. Sensory play and creative activities as well as a snack is organised for the children whilst parents, grandparents and carers can have a chat.

“It is a very relaxed environment and is a safe place where your child can explore and play without any tantrums or developmental problems being judged or misinterpreted,” said Amy.

She said that they were currently seeking support with funding as they felt it was important to make sure their services were free.
