Katrina strikes gold

Head Girl Gets Gold! The school is delighted that Head Girl Katrina Dalgarno has completed her Duke of Edinburgh Award at gold level.

Katrina is the first Brechin High School pupil to complete her gold award whilst still at school. This is a tremendous achievement and recognition of many hours of hard work and commitment.

Katrina has received significant support throughout the programme from Mrs O'Neill and other members of staff who contribute to the Duke of Edinburgh programme.

National Schools Volleyball Festival Impressive debut for Brechin!

For the first time ever, two teams from Brechin High competed in the National Schools Volleyball Festival (North East) in Huntly on Thursday, March 16.

A girls team and a boys team put their skills to the test against schools from Kirkwall, Huntly, Mearns Academy, Inverurie and Kemnay. Pupils were required not only to demonstrate their playing skills, but also to score, line judge and referee, tasks which all the Brechin pupils did very well.

The girls team consisted of all S3 pupils, and they have been training during their Thursday lunchtimes since last October.

In the morning rounds they played some excellent volleyball and lost only one game. Some particularly strong serving made them a force to contend with. This put them into Division One for the afternoon, and they knew that they were in for some tough matches. They again played well, winning two and losing three, which left them fourth out of 11 teams.

This was an excellent finish for the first attempt at a National Festival. The team included:– Grace Middleton, Rachael Matthew, Laura Hunter, Jenna Sturrock and Nicola Sturrock.

The boys team were a lot less experienced, and also the youngest by a long way, but they were determined to give it their best shot.

They played some good volleyball at times, worked very well as a team and came to within a point of getting a win, but it was not to be.

However, next year, with more experience, they have shown they have the talent to go back and be competitive. The team included: Robert Blues, Stuart Allison, Alasdair Fairlie, Lewis Allison and Corey Henderson.

Ms Strudley and Mr Cargill would like to congratulate the pupils on their play, enthusiasm and conduct – they were a credit to the school.

P7 Transition Day

On Thursday, March 16, P7 pupils from local primary schools had the opportunity to work together on the theme of moving to Brechin High School.

This required the use of key skills such as teamwork, collaboration and problem solving. Working in teams, they produced a collection of items, including painted t-shirts, mouse mats and desk tidies.

The pupils are to be congratulated for their hard work and excellent behaviour. They will now be looking forward to their next visit on June 14-15.
