200th birth for local maternity unit
THE maternity unit at which most Brechin mothers give birth has reached a major landmark.
The Montrose Maternity Unit recently reached its 200 birth of 2007 - the first time in it's history that it has reached this milestone in any one year.
And Brechin mum Mairi McLennan was the mother who helped the unit reach that significant figure when her baby Kirstin Duthie was born 10.43 pm on November 29. Father Phil Duthie was also present for the happy occasion.
"The numbers of births at the unit have been growing year on year ever since 2002," said a spokesperson for the unit.
"In 2002 there were only 47 births and so we made changes to our approach. Every year word has been spreading and getting better and better and more people want to go there.
"We have a 70% water birth rate, which is extremely high. Right from the start of pregnancy the midwives also encourage women to think about how they could have a straight-forward birth," they added.
