A tree for James

In the heat of a summer afternoon at Edzell a small group gathered to remember a young man who was killed in action 70 years ago to the day.

Lieutenant James Russell died in Italy on July 24, 1944, he was only 21. James was the son of Mr George Russell and Mrs Marjorie Russell of The Burn and last Thursday former Lord Lieutenant of Kincardine, Mr John Smart, planted an Italian Cypress tree in his memory. Mr Smart had actually met James at a tennis party at The Burn in 1939 at the start of the war.
