Anger over proposals to close play parks

Proposals for the closure of a number of play parks in the Brechin and Edzell area have been met with anger by both the City of Brechin and District Community Council and the Inveresk Community Councils (ICC).
A four-week public consultation on the playparks started on Monday, November 5. Members of the public are being asked to answer a number of questions, including if they agree with the assessments of playparks set for closure, and how often they use their local or other parks.
In Brechin and Edzell the number of play areas could reduce from 11 to just four, a drop of almost 64 per cent. This will take the number of play equipment items down from 73 pieces to just 41 - a reduction of 44 per cent.
Play parks which could disappear as part of the proposals would be: Cookston Crescent, Drumachlie Park, Durriehill Place, Edzell Muir trim trail, Hillview, Mountskip and Wards Park, leaving parks at Edzell Muir, Inch Park, Brechin Public Park and Tarfside village.
Eric Gray, of the Brechin Community Council, expressed his disapproval of the proposal highlighting that the council has stated that redevelopment has been carried out on play parks in Montrose, Monifieth, Carnoustie, Kirriemuir, Arbroath and with Forfar Lochside being scheduled for improvement this financial year meaning Brechin had once again missed out.
Disbelief was noted by members of the ICC over the Angus Council’s decision to hold a public consultation on Monday, November 26, from 2 to 4pm in the Brechin Leisure Centre - a time when most parents would either be at work or looking after their children.
Councillor Bob Myles said: “They came with these proposals a few years ago and nothing was done. It has now been brought forward again and I still think it is unacceptable.”
Chairman of Inveresk Community Council Duncan Smedley said: “The community council would like to stress that anybody who is concerned about these threatened closures then they need to speak up, attend the meeting, or write to the director of neighbourhood services before it is too late.”
