Attic info evening to focus on legal highs

STAFF at The Attic youth drop-in centre are all set to play a major role in equipping parents and carers with much-needed information on the latest gateway drug currently causing great concerns amongst the local community.

A parents information evening is being staged at The Attic on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 pm, entitled "Legal but Lethal" and focusing on Bubbles, the latest drug craze to sweep throughout Angus.

The Attic's Jim Milne explained why the event has been organised and who will be available for parents to quiz.

He said: "We have youth workers and also representatives from The Web Project, ex-addicts, young persons' health workers, drug and alcohol prevention workers and representatives of Tayside Police, to name just a few who will be present on the night.

"This evening is being organised to inform and arm parents with information about Bubbles.

"It's something we at The Attic have grown increasingly concerned with and something we felt we had to act upon in as positive a manner as possible, if nothing else to act as a vehicle which will get parents and carers better informed with facts.

"Everyone is aware that this is a growing problem in this area and also throughout the rest of Angus and we want to be in a position to tackle it head on. However, we can only provide assistance to those who take the trouble to attend.

"This is a real problem and one which, make no mistake, exists in Brechin and the local area around Brechin.

We want to put forward people who are armed with the facts and people who will be able to answer questions that parents may have, however close to the bone those questions may appear to be.

"One of the major difficulties facing us with Bubbles is the fact that it is yet to be outlawed.

"However, given the increasing concerns over its use as a gateway drug, opposition to it is growing as each day passes and the more support we can get for a move to have it declared illegal, the more strength that argument has.

"I would urge all parents with a teenage son or daughter, whether they attend The Attic or not, to pop along on the night as this event will provide them with information they previously may have not had access to and should be useful for future reference.

"There will be no stone left unturned on the night. Any question people may wish to ask is fine by us. Only by facing up to the problem can we hope to tackle it in a constructive manner and we want to get parents together and get them talking.

"If nothing else, it allows us the opportunity to provide information for parents on the symptoms to look out for and where they can seek further help and information.

"This is a real issue in this area and this is too good an opportunity for local parents to miss out on "The event is open to adults only and we will have further reference materials available on the night. The cafe will also be open for teas and coffee after the event."

A reminder that "Legal but Lethal" takes place At The Attic, 19 Clerk Street, on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 pm.
