Brechin regeneration committee members decided

THE people who will decide on the projects which receive a share of Brechin's £3m regeneration cash have now been chosen, it has been announced.

A project support group made up of the three local councillors and six members of the public will advise on which projects benefit from the new townscape heritage initiative (THI) funding.

Their recommendation would be considered by a second committee, called the partnership executive, made up of the local councillors and three members of the support group.

And the three councillors have now chosen the people they would like to stand on the committees from a shortlist of applicants, who will have been contacted to inform them of their selection by the time you read this.

An inaugural meeting of the project support group, which will outline their duties and responsibilities, is now expected to be held this Friday, after which the identities of the committees are expected to be made known to the public.

Under the operation of the THI, the support group will look at grant applications, and make recommendations etc, while the executive body will be responsible for making final decisions on all aspects of the THI.

The two committees are likely to meet every four weeks, with provision for extraordinary meetings outside those times if the need should arise.

Meanwhile, Sarah Kettles has been appointed manager of the THI and will take overall responsibility for the running of the scheme as of March 24, when she formally starts work.

It is thought that the first official business meetings of the two committees will be held days after her start date, although this has yet to be confirmed.

"Sarah starts March 24 and will be the project manager for the THI, "said Angus Council conservation officer Paul Mitchell, who has taken on her responsibilities in the period up to her appointment.

"On Friday the first meeting will be held with the committees, when they'll be informed of the level of commitment expected and if they wish to proceed.

"Once the committees are formalised the first real meeting will likely be held at the end of March.

"We're also starting to get quite a lot of interest from a large number of people, who are popping into our office (the former registrar's office in Panmure Street] to find out more," he added.

A member of staff will be in the former Registrar's Office between 10am and 4pm every Friday to answer any questions locals may have about the THI.

- The Brechiner hopes to feature an article outlining Ms Kettles' hopes for the project, and her previous roles, in the near future.
