Brechin pupils among Angus Brass Band winners

BRECHIN High School students were among three dozen young brass band players representing Angus who took top spot in their section at a national competition recently.

Some 36 young musicians from the county took part in the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships in Perth Concert Hall late last month.

And the cream of young talent from Brechin, Carnoustie, Monifieth, Forfar and Arbroath all came together under the baton of Mr. Michael Robertson to compete for the first time in a National Competition.

"As it was the first year that the band had competed and as the band were all aged under 16, they were entered for the Development Section and competed against bands from Jedforest, Loanhead, Perthshire and St. Ronan's," said a spokesperson.

"The band played extremely well and won first place in their section, to the delight of the young players and the large contingent of supportive parents. Their prize for winning the Section was the very impressive Syd Griffin Memorial Trophy," they added.

"One of the judges praised the achievements of the young players and also the efforts put in by the tutors.

'Proud achievement'

"The team of Michael Robertson, Paul Judge and Linda Dallas should be congratulated for their efforts and be proud of the achievement of their band at their very first outing.

"From the standard of play shown by the band, they would have easily given the bands in the Premier Section a run for their money and their time will come.

"In fact this was the first time that any band had achieved a gold award in this particular Section of the annual competition," they added.

For their performance the band played a 15 minute programme. They started with the vibrant Rondeau march. This was followed by the very well known hymn Old Rugged Cross, played in a blues setting.

The next piece, Rainforest, featured a solo by Ailsa Russell on her tenor horn. This was followed by a very fast and technically difficult piece called Be a Clown.

The Gael

The final item was The Gael from the film 'The Last of the Mohicans' and provided a huge crescendo finish which generated a rousing applause from the two adjudicators.

At the end of the day, eight of the band members, Jed Smith, Joanne Frier, Hayley and Calum Tonner, Ross and Sarah Knight, Michael Iles and Ailsa Russell also took their places within the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) who put on a short concert for the large audience.

These players will be joining NYBBS on their tour of Japan in July 2008.
