Call for public park entrance spruce-up

A BRECHIN mother has called for money to be "invested in the health and future of local youngsters" by having the area at the entrance to the public park invested in and improved upon.

The lady in question wished to remain anonymous. However, she said she felt that there was so much that could be done to improve the particular area where her concerns lay and that she also felt that it wouldn't take a fortune to see her wishes carried out.

And one local councillor has said she would go as far as enlisting the help of volunteers to get the area looking its best once again.

"I can't believe the public park, which has always been a beautiful area, has been allowed to become so overgrown," said the mother.

"This isn't because of a lack of hard work on anyone's part, simply through the growth of this millennium forest which I feel has been something of a complete and utter red herring.

"I am all for nature and conservation, and I support the planting of as many trees and shrubs as possible.

"However, what we have here is an area of ground, which clearly isn't suitable and sustainable as a bed for a large group of trees as the ones on display here in the park.

"The very wet, boggy ground isn't a surprise to any local person. In my father and mother's day it was a boating pond, therefore, its doubtful that planting trees on top of it was ever going to work out to be a successful venture. I would love it if they had flourished, believe me. However, the exact opposite has been the case.

"This whole corner of the park could do with a tidy up. I had read previously that the former decant houses had been sold off, yet all of them appear still to be in place.

"Behind them you have the derelict tennis courts, which have simply been allowed to go to wrack and ruin.

"Brechin doesn't have much, but surely what we do have should be looked after properly and cared for.

"I would like to see this whole area redeveloped either as a recreation and sports area for children or as a site which can be enjoyed once again by people of all ages.

"We aren't talking about loads of money either. How much would it cost to redevelop the tennis courts?

"Of course, the council will probably argue there is already one down at the leisure centre.

"However, for younger kids it's often too far to go down there and this is a place they could go to with their parents or grandparents.

"I think this is one area which could be tidied up in a short period of time and be ready for the kids for their summer holidays.

"Spending money in the park could benefit the health and the future of a number of local youngsters."

Local SNP Councillor Mairi Evans said: "Though there are many positives about Brechin, including the THI project which is externally funded, I understand residents feelings that their city is the forgotten burgh in Angus by this Alliance administration when you see the state of the park and other areas around the city.

"Some of the council's 4.5million earmarked for the re-routing of the A935, for instance, could have been utilised to enhance the city centre and our green spaces but it appears this will all be channelled into Montrose.

"I have taken this matter up with the relevant council department and await their response.

"However, I intend to also approach the Volunteer Centre Angus to see if this could be a project local volunteers may wish to get involved in."
