Can you help a Brechin man in his relative search?
FOLLOWING a year of research into their family's history, a local man has contacted the "Brechiner" to try and solve the puzzle of whether or not he has any long-lost relatives who live nearby.
Brechin resident Angus Copeland is helping his auntie, Isobel MacLean (nee Milne) put together genealogy records for the Milne family, so far dating back to 1868, and they have reason to believe that they might find more pieces of the puzzle in the Careston area.
Angus takes up the story: "The man in the picture is Alexander Gove Milne who was born at Benholm, which is out towards the coast between St Cyrus and Stonehaven.
"He was born on October 10, 1869 and was married to Margaret Scott, who was born on Aril 27, 1868 in Tillinturk, Kincardinshire.
"My auntie and my mother's father, William Dickson Milne was born on May 30, 1924, but I don't know where and I don't even have a date of birth for their mother, Jane Gray.
"According to my auntie and my mother, William Dickson Milne had brothers and sisters from the Careston area. I believe they had a small holding or a couple of small holdings in that area and I am basically looking for some information.
"My auntie was sent some of the genealogy stuff through the internet by her son and has been looking through records for about the past year.
"She visited Benholm, as did my mother, father and I, but, unlike us, she was able to find Alexander Gove Milne's resting place at Benholm church.
"We had visited before but couldn't find anything and were unable to get into the church, but when she visited she was able to explore the area and found his resting place."
Angus reckons that the family might be in luck when it comes to finding some distant relatives, as he has become aware of at least one person who fits the bill in terms of looks and name.
"There is another twist in the story, which might or might not be a coincidence," he explained.
"I often pass a chap at Careston who drives a red pick up and is the spitting image of my cousin David.
"When I spoke to my boss at Glenesk Travel, Alan Gray, he told me that the man is called Ewan Milne and he is a welder in this area, so there is possibly a connection there.
"Again, through information that my boss gave me, it turns out Ewan has a brother Logan who is a potato merchant locally.
"I don't want to approach either of them in case they think 'what are you after', but I thought this might be the best way to see if anybody could give us any information about our family tree."
