Charlotte's experience of a lifetime

A YOUNG girl guide from Brechin is one of just 18 girls from throughout Scotland selected to take part in the 22nd World Scout Jamboree, which runs from July to August 2011 in Scandinavia.

Charlotte Yates (14) will join a select band of her peers, with each group being attached to a Scouting unit.

The Jamboree site is in southern Sweden. The nearest town is Rinkaby and the nearest city is Kristianstad.

The site itself is a sandy military base, although the military won't be present during the jamboree!

Charlotte, a member of the Brechin 2nd Guides, is also part of the East of Scotland Jamboree Unit, which is made up of 27 Scouts, nine Guides, three Scout leaders and one Guide leader.

Charlotte attended three selection days/weekends before being invited to attend.

Having been lucky enough to be chosen, she then had to start thinking about how to raise the almost 2000 it will cost to attend.

The Guide Scottish headquarters, county association and unit, have been very generous with their support, but each Guide has to raise a very substantial part of their total themselves through various fund-raising and sponsorship activities. Parents are not allowed to contribute.

Charlotte has already done a car boot sale and been sponsored for several activities and is busy with other fund-raising plans, such as a coffee morning, cake stall, tombola and possibly word searches and other puzzles.

A world Scout jamboree happens every four years and is a gathering of Scouts from almost every country in the world. It really will be the experience of a lifetime for those lucky enough to take part.

To put the scale of the event into perspective, it's bigger than the Olympics, both in terms of the number of participants (over 30,000), and also the number of countries represented at the event.

Participants will live and take part in activities alongside Scouts from all over the world, making new friends for life, and experiencing different cultures you never knew existed

The Jamboree takes place from July 27 to August 7 2011, but the East Scotland jamboree unit will be spending a day in Copenhagen on the way there and then two or three days as a guest of another Scout or Guide in Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia or Poland after the jamboree closes before making their way home.
