Council aims for opportunites for all
Angus Council is working with other agencies in the county to ensure every school leaver has the opportunity to do something positive with their life.
As part of the national Opportunities for All strategy, the council and its partners are supporting young people in making the transition from school into further learning, training, employment or volunteering.
At a meeting of the council’s Education Committee on Thursday, August 23, members heard that in Angus, the proportion of young people initially entering a positive destination on leaving schools at 89.7% compares well to the national figure.
However, that leaves approximately 500 young people between their 16th and 20th birthday who are not in employment, education or training.
Committee convener Sheena Welsh said: “This level of disengagement among 16 to 20 year olds represents a significant financial and social cost which is being addressed through Opportunities for All.
“Although some very good work is being carried out in Angus to help young people make the transition from school into a positive destination, we must continue to ensure that all young people are supported when leaving school on their journey to future success.”
A report before the committee set out a number of priority areas for action to address this challenge and to broaden and increase the range of routes into future employment, education or training for young people on leaving school.
