Dazzling new facilities pop up at Stracathro school

STRACATHRO Primary's pupils are beginning to enjoy some of the fruits of their parents' labours after £10,000 worth of new facilities began popping up at the school.

The school's parent group was recently successful in a five-figure application for lottery cash to improve the school grounds.

The school has been committed to getting the most out of the outdoors for its pupils as part of its ongoing eco-schools push.

And some of the dazzling new facilities that have appeared outside the school in recent times on the back of the cash boost include a play hut, a canopy for the nursery kids, picnic tables and a playground shelter.

The cash also allowed the school to pay for an art teacher to come in and help the children decorate their new facilities.

"The kids had a ball painting the shelter. Art teacher Sarah Isaac came in for two days, the kids made stencils and everything, and the shelter looks amazing," said school headteacher, Sue Stewart.

"They're very proud of their works.

"The parents group did all the work applying for the grant and had a big say in what the cash was spent on. The kids were also asked what they wanted. The work all ties in nicely with the eco-schools scheme and getting kids outside and using the open spaces," she added.

Despite the many improvements already made, the pupils aren't finished yet, and in the coming weeks the school's garden is set to undergo a dramatic makeover using the remainder of the cash.

On Monday the school welcomed a wildlife ranger from the Muirton reserve, near Forfar, to discuss some of the things they can do in their garden.

And the school is also hoping to pick up a wide range of plants and bits and pieces from the Trinity Garden Centre in the near future.
