Delving back into the early history of Brechin
BRECHIN Library will take a trip back in time when it hosts 'An Afternoon of History' on Wednesday, October 29.
The event is part of family learning month and kicks off at 2 pm when it will give people a chance to come along and find out how to research their family history, as well as having the opportunity to use the computers in the library to search genealogy sites.
Bygone days in Brechin will be represented with old local photographs of the town giving people the chance both to reminisce about times they remember as well as finding out new information about how the town used to be.
The big draw, however, is an illustrated talk by Norman Atkinson, cultural services manager in charge of libraries, museums, theatre and tourist information centres for Angus Council, titled "The Early History of Brechin", which starts at 3 pm.
Norman, who is also chairman of the Angus Museums and Heritage Forum and was formerly president of the Scottish Museums Federation and vice-chairman of the Scottish Museums Council, has talked about the early history of various places in the past, but he was quick to praise the library staff for the work they have put into the project.
He said: "Credit has to go to the staff, as it is them who organised this project and are striving to get people interested in all things historical.
"I have done a few talks over the years about various places, including Brechin. I will be tracing the very early history from the original church through to the middle ages and the change to the cathedral city which we have now."
As the title of the talk would suggest, Norman will be looking at the town's earliest beginnings, from its routes in the church through to the present day and how that has shaped the Brechin which we now know.
"In looking at the early city to what is here today I will say a bit about the ancient church and how Brechin was given to the church in the late 10th century," Norman explained.
"Although it was founded by King Kenneth II, I will be debating just what the royal grant was. I will look at the church which became the cathedral in the late 12th century.
"I will have a carousel projector with various colour slides I hope will help illustrate the story."
All the events are free. For any further information pop in to Brechin Library at 10 St. Ninian's Square or telephone them on (01356) 622687.
