Do not miss this fly-tie masterclass

THE nets are off and anglers in the Esk district are hoping that the skies will open and allow what is left of the summer grilse run to move up river and give a bit of the sport which has been sadly lacking once again this summer.

Fly tiers will be delighted to hear that Steve Newsome (official tying expert to the English Ladies Fly-fishing team) is once again to give one of his famous demonstrations at the Bridgend Bar Lounge on Tuesday, September 12 at 7.30pm.

If past experience is anything to go by this will be yet another evening of fascination and new ideas, as Steve is a master of the art and is always out there at the edge of any new techniques and the use of new materials.

The event is sponsored by Brechin Angling Club but a warm welcome will be made to any angler; and I can only suggest that this is one not to be missed.

Brechin Angling Club secretary Stuart Robertson has still a few days' salmon fishing available to members on the Lower Kinnaird beat of the South Esk during the week of September 11 to 16. Bill's on holiday again but what a chance this is to fish one of the best beats in this part of the world.

If we get some rain and, with the nets off, you could well have the experience of a lifetime. Phone Stuart on (01356) 623 713 now. Just to whet the appetite further this beat had a fish of 23 lbs two weeks ago.

Every time I go to the "fishesk" website it disappoints me to see just how few of the beats take up the option to be on it. Surely the proprietors etc. in this area should be taking the opportunity to bring our rivers to the fore and if you need proof that this works just look at the success on the Tweed.

Missing also are the angling clubs in the area, and I ask myself why? Have they nothing to say? Are they prepared to live in the dark ages?

I know this is not so and I would urge them to get in touch with Marshall Halliday on (01674) 850 549 to help to bring the Esks etc. to this new exciting era.

I hope that soon you to will realise just how important this site is to yourselves - ie. did you know that you can get the water levels from the SEPA stations every hour and there is no need for the journey to see if the river has risen with the rain that is falling.

I bring up the station at Prieston Brig most days - just a great site.
