Earlier opening at recycling centres
THE recycling centres in Angus will open at 8.15 am at weekends for a trial period, in moves intended to reduce the queues of traffic waiting for the centres to open in the mornings.
The new opening times will begin on July 10.
At present, the centres open from 10.15 am to 7 pm on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer period of May to September.
For a trial period, the centre opening hours will be 8.15 am to 5 pm at weekends. Summer weekday opening hours will remain from 8.15 am to 7 pm.
Convener of neighbourhood services, councillor Jim Millar said: "We constantly monitor the patterns of usage of our centres.
"We used to open at 8.15 am but it looked like the demand was not there for earlier opening at week-ends at that time and we changed to 10.15 am a couple of years ago.
"Since then we started experiencing problems in summer, with traffic queuing up and backing onto roads as people wait to get in at 10.15 am.
"Our staff also experience problems within the site as a large number of people arrive on site when the gates open. By moving the opening time to 8.15 am we hope to overcome both these problems.
"Evening visitors to the centres at week-ends are currently few, so the proposal to move two hours from the end of the day back to the morning means a better service for our customers at no additional cost."
There are no changes planned at this time to the opening hours of the recycling centres during the winter period of mid-September to early May.
They will remain at Monday to Friday 8.15 am to 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10.15 am to 5 pm meantime, while council staff monitor the results of the new summer weekend opening hours.
Recycling centre hours as from Saturday, July 10 will be as follows:-
Summer period (early May to mid September) - Monday to Friday 8.15am - 7pm; Saturday and Sunday 8.15am - 5pm.
Winter period (mid September to early May) - Monday to Friday 8.15am - 5pm; Saturday and Sunday 10.15am - 5pm.
