Edzell fundraising vet to hit road again

WELL-known Edzell fundraiser Bobby Campbell is set to hit the road again.

His constant fundraising walks took a bit of a back seat last year after he underwent surgery for hip replacements.

However, he is back in shape and, not one to let a hip replacement get in the way of his work, will soon embark on an epic 2000-mile walk.

To achieve his goal he hopes to complete five or six mile walks every day for a year until January of next year - with proceeds going to the charity SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, and Air Force Association).

"Recently I have been asked by members of the public as to what I am doing now, after having a hip replacement in March of 2007," he said.

"I am now healed up and fit and well. I am training by walking three miles a day for the last eight months. Sometime this month I will walk for five to six miles a day for a year until January '09. I hope to complete 2000 miles for this walk," he added.

However, as if a return to his famous walking exploits wasn't enough, he also plans to visit local schools for talks with pupils.

He hopes to use his experience of fundraising and time as a janitor to provide a positive role-model for the kids.

"My second project is called "The Way Forward". I have a mind to visit Primary Schools and talk about achievements and my past experiences as a soldier-school janitor-policeman, in view of helping some of the children turning their lives around for better good," he continued.

"I have had clearance from the education department and have been interviewed by Mr Jim Anderson, director of education and the blessing of Mr John Swinney MSP, whom I am corresponding with. I will have two primary schools as a trial run this year. I hope I can be a roll model for the children.

"As I was once a janitor of two schools as a head janitor of a primary school, I know of some of the problems. This is a voluntary project only to help the children and the teachers. There is a lot of issues that we can talk about," he added.
