It makes sense at the Harbourside Grill that the atmospheric view of Arbroath Harbour reflects the quality of the fish dishes on offer.

There is a number to choose from on the extensive menu, which caters for all appetites, from family favourites like steak pie, to an impressive array of burgers, a friendly vegetarian selection and for the more carnivorous diners a good selection of meat as you like it.

However, it was the fish that held my attention; something I don’t often get to enjoy at home, I delight in trying new fish dishes when dining out.

I opted for the crab pate with melba toast and the Arbroath Smokie and prawn linguine, while my companion went for the chicken and pepper sauce, with the banana and caramel cake to finish.

My crab starter was plentiful, with generous dollops of the creamy and delicately flavoured pate going perfectly with the handmade melba toast and when that ran out the crunchy salad was perfect to mop up the rest.

I’ll admit that after ordering the linguine I was momentarily concerned the smokie might prove too over-powering and the sauce too rich, but I was happily proven wrong.

The firm texture of the shredded smokie and its deep smoked taste provided a flavoursome counterpoint to the rich and creamy sauce. The plentiful prawns drank up the sauce and added a splash of colour to offset the mounds of linguine.

My companion’s chicken was moist and tender, the creamy cracked peppercorn sauce spilling over the chargrilled breast and giving it a nice bite. The accompanying vegetables were crunchy and were ideal for scooping up the extra sauce.

By this time I was comfortably full, but I will admit to a twinge of jealousy when the caramel and banana cake appeared, beautifully presented with set cream to one side, a colourful selection of seasonal fruits. What little I was able to pilfer before it disappeared was light and moist and only increased my jealousy.

The decor is clean and bright and complements the large airy windows looking out onto the harbour and although it filled up rapidly during our visit the dining room never seemed over-crowded and the staff remained friendly, efficient and attentive throughout.
