Hopes fishery survives

THE closure or near of the Loch Leven Fishery is causing much ado worldwide and as such we are being bombarded with rumour and counter rumour.

One thing certain is that they are only to have four boats plus the two which belong to SANA., but then again I was reliably informed at the end of last week that they were in negotiation with two angling clubs about the purchase of the twenty others and that these clubs would come to an agreement regarding the lease of the water and fishery.

I sincerely hope this to be true and hope that we will not see the demise of such a famous location.

Once again we have witnessed the introduction of foreign species into a loch and this leading to the decline of the native population and its ecostructure.

The rainbow trout in this instance is what many of today's anglers are looking for but they do not naturally regenerate in most of Scotland's water and they are also cannibalistic and eat the fry and eggs of the natural populations.

This fact leads me to question the introduction of rainbows into Lintrathen Loch as it will – as it did in the past – lead to the near loss of the indigenous brown trout stock. It is disturbing that we should make so many mistakes in the scientific world we live in, but until the necessity to catch lots of fish everyday and big fish arises then we will continue to see our fabulous heritage pushed aside – and then where do we go?

I spent a fabulous Saturday at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace. Once again it is an event packed with every conceivable point of interest not only for us the fishermen but for the shooting, hunting enthusiast and every was other country sport addict.

The demonstrations of falconry and dog handling were superb but once again to sit and watch Ally Gowans enthral a large crowd with his mastery of the fly rod was in itself worth the admission.

Backing up this was a vast array from the trades people there to tempt us from our cash with all the latest in tackle, machinery, consumables, holidays and of course the arrays of foods and drinks from across the land.

I say it every year and it's worth repeating., if you were not there mark it in your calendar for next year – you don't know what you're missing.
