Kinnordy House, near Kirriemuir, will ring to the strains of chamber music for the first time in decades when it hosts the area’s first chamber music festival.

The three-day event, which will be held early next month, will feature some of the country’s most talented musicians performing in a setting appropriate to the weekend’s programme.

At the invitation of Mary and Patrick Gifford, artistic directors Daniel Tong and Robin Michael have put together the programme which features a combination of concerts and a “Discovery Day” which will focus on the music of the First World War.

The festival was the idea of Mrs Gifford who has been involved with similar events in England. She has also known the musicians for more than 15 years.

She said: “Many years ago I was involved with the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival, which was a group of music students who took a youth hostel on the Welsh border for 10 days, rehearsing and playing together, and they gave around four concerts in the neighbourhood.

“That was about 15 or 16 years ago and this is the same core of musicians. Many are now distinguished in their own right and they so love playing together that they still do it for pleasure.

“They’ve wanted to come to Scotland for some years and when I moved to Scotland I said we had a possible venue.”

The programme, which will begin on Friday, April 8 at 7pm, will include works by Brahms and Schumann while the Discovery Day which will be held between 11am and 6pm on April 9 will also feature Debussy, Janacek, Howells and Faure.

The weekend will be rounded off with a recital at 11am on Sunday, April 10.

Mrs Gifford added: “The house is stunning and it seemed a good venue to hear chamber music as it was composed to be played - in a house and not a concert hall.

Suggested donations to attend the recitals are £15 each, £45 to attend the Discovery Day which includes lunch and refreshments, and £65 to attend all three events.
