Local premises bid to become 'best bar none'
THREE licensed premises in Brechin are bidding to become the 'best bar none' in Angus.
City Royal Bar, Hudsons Bar and Victoria Bar are among the list of accredited premises eligible for the coveted Best Bar None awards.
This is the third year of the Angus Best Bar None scheme, run by the Focus on Alcohol Angus project.
An invitation to take part in the scheme was launched in August in Forfar.
The scheme aims to improve standards in the licensed trade in Angus and to encourage the safe, responsible drinking of alcohol.
The winners will be announced on Wednesday, February 3 at a ceremony at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel, sponsors of this year's award ceremony, and the race is now on for those premises which have been short-listed for the pub, bar and night club category awards to become the overall winner for Best Bar None Angus. These will be announced at the awards ceremony.
Spokesperson for Focus on Alcohol Angus, Eileen McArthur said: "This year's awards ceremony promises to be extra special for the licensed trade.
"In addition to the presentations of the awards the guests are also being treated to a showing of the one woman drama 'Acceptance'; a story of one woman reflecting both seriously and humorously about her alcohol use across the years.
"I am also pleased that this year we have a special award for disability awareness and accessibility being sponsored by the Angus Local Licensing Forum, which is keen to promote licensed premises that are easily accessible and welcoming to individuals who have physical and learning disabilities."
At the awards ceremony there will be a special opportunity for this year's guest to snap up extra 'BBN Bonus Points' for next year by signing up to initiatives such as the Angus Designated Drivers Scheme, Angus Partnership on Domestic Abuse and the Tayside Condom Initiative.
Last year's Best Bar None overall winner Sheena Thomson of the Vault Bar, Monifieth praised the scheme.
She said: "This is an excellent scheme for publicans. When I entered for the award, it made me look with a fresh eye at the way I ran the premises and allowed me to consolidate some of our good practice into a house policy.
"This has in turn given my staff more confidence to deal with any issues which arise. We have also been praised by regular customers who are pleased we won the award."
Chief Superintendent Alan Campbell, chair of the Focus on Alcohol Project Board stated: "I congratulate all of the premises that have achieved successful accreditation to the Best Bar None scheme this year in Angus, particularly those who have been short listed as finalists in pub, bar and night club categories."
He continued: "It gives me pleasure to see the Best Bar None scheme continue to go from strength to strength in Angus.
"I have been most impressed by the standard of all entrants this year and it is apparent that licensees and staff across the county have continued to seek to improve their standards of excellence.
"I am of the belief that Angus has some of the best licensed premises in the country, and the extent to which bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants across the region have actively participated in Best Bar None is a testimony to this.
"The whole idea behind Best Bar None is to strive to make licensed premises safe and pleasurable places to visit, and to provide customers with high standards of service.
"The accredited premises in this year's scheme have achieved this aim, and as a result many licensed premises across Angus now have even more to offer their communities."
