OVER 30 fire-fighters from across Tayside, last Friday tackled a serious house fire at a block of flats in Brechin.

Fire-fighters worked all day long to get the outbreak under control.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Bog Road, Brechin, shortly after 9 am.

At its height fire-fighters from Brechin, Montrose, Forfar and Arbroath were involved, with a command support module from Dundee also in attendance.

Smoke was seen billowing from the roof of the building. As the fire took hold, and tiles fell from the roof, flames were seen coming out through the roof.

Fire crews attempted to control the fire, which is thought to have taken hold in the roof space of the three-storey building, by working from the first floor. However, a risk assessment whilst in the building deemed this to be too dangerous.

With adjoining flats in the building the main effort of the crews was to control the blaze and contain it to the roof space.

It was decided to use hoses on ladders over the property and by 2.30 pm they had isolated the fire from reaching the adjoining flats.

When conditions were less risky two fire-fighters, using suppression tanks, entered the building while hoses tackled the front of the building.

The fire was eventually extinguished in the afternoon, but fire-fighters remained on site until after 5 pm to dampen down and returned again at 9 pm with thermal imaging cameras to identify hot-spots.

As fireman tackled the blaze, police blocked off the junction of Bog Road and Park Road, and the access to the rear at Commerce Street.

No one was in the flat at the time and near-neighbours were evacuated, with the result no one was injured.

An ambulance was sent to the scene of the fire but was not needed.

An investigative team is probing the exact cause of the fire.
