Make a will and make a difference too

THE ever-popular Will Aid fundraiser is set to roll out across the UK this November - and as always a number of local solicitors are taking part in the scheme.

Will Aid runs every other year in a bid to generate cash for nine different good causes and, since its creation in 1988, has raised a cool 6m for charity.

It does this through the generous help of solicitors firms across the country, all of which offer to draw up free basic wills during the month of November - only asking for a donation to Will Aid in payment for their services.

"When someone you love dies you are in turmoil. It is difficult to cope with grief let alone financial insecurity," said Will Aid celebrity patron, Dame Judy Dench.

"This is why it is so important for every adult to have a proper, up-to-date will. This is the best gift you can leave for those you love.

"And if you choose to make your will with a will aid solicitor you will also be leaving a loving gift to the thousands of children, families and communities around the world helped by the Will Aid charities," she added.

Local solicitors firms taking part this year include Miller & Company, Thorntons Law LLP and Maclean & Lowson in Forfar, Maclean & Lowson in Kirriemuir, and J. &. D. G. Shiell and Ferguson & Will in Brechin.

During the month of November local folk will be able to make a free appointment and have a free will drawn up. However, suggested donations are 40 for a codicil, 75 for a single will, or 110 for a pair of wills.

To put those figures into context a donation of 40 could feed a family of five in Sudan for two months, while an offering of 75 could train two health professionals in ways to prevent falls in older people.

A gift of 110 meanwhile could train two heads of household in Indonesia in boat building so that they could gain skills to earn their own livelihoods and support their families.

This year organisers are hopeful of beating their previous campaign total of 685,000, and will split the cash between ActionAid, the British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC, Save the CHildren UK, Sightsavers International, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland).

Since its launch in the 1980s the charity has put the cash to work supplying people with life's essentials, such as clean drinking water, food and health care. It has also given children opportunities to learn and protected old people.
